l read The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath about six months ago and I am looking for something similar, but I am not sure what to read. I will take any recommendations but l especially think Virginia Woolf might be good, I am just not sure where to begin with her.

I'd prefer real literature over some kind of informational or psychiatric book, though if you know of any exceptional books of the latter l might give them a try. Thanks!
Thanks, these are all great so far! l have some summer reading now :)

Electroboy by Andrew Behrman is a really good book on bipolar. The book by Kay Redfield Jamison the other poster was talking about is An Unquiet Mind. The Noonday Demon by Andrew Solomon concentrates on depression, but it is also pretty great. I can not look at my bookshelf right now, or I could probably give you a few more. The woman who wrote Wasted just released a biography on her bipolar, too, but I can not recall her name.

I am bipolar & for easily read vs textbook books I strongly recommend two autobiograhies by Kay Redfield Jamison. She is a medical doctor who also is bipolar. Her books r candid, heart-wrenching, & r written so others can relate to her. Sorry I can not give u the titles--they're boxed while my house is being renovated. By the way, she co-authored the psychiatrist is 'bible' on manic-depression (bipolar).

Also look for the book by Kathy Cronkite (her dad is former newsmen Walter Cronkite). It has several tales on depression.

Patty Duke & Carrie Fisher have also written their stories of dealing with bipolar disorder.

There is a psychology book that transcends psychology called ''Man is Search For Meaning'' by Viktor Frankl. Frankl is a holocaust survivor, & the book is about dealing with difficult events, & how u find meaning in life when u go through hard times. I think it is a good choice because it not only deals with dark & difficult things, but gives u guidance for how to cope with them without sounding like stating the obvious like Dr. Phil, or resorting to a grab-bag of New Age cliches. It is also much more interesting than many other informational or flat out psychological books I've read.
